Take Action with These Organizations

These are most certainly interesting times.  While forward-thinking approaches to growing food and taking care of the land are on the rise, the industrial agriculture mindset remains a real – and politically powerful – “challenge.”

Here are a few current issues to be aware of and take action on.  If you know of other agriculture and/or cycling related issues that need public attention, please submit a brief description and appropriate links to our webmaster and we will consider posting them here.

Information on the recently passed Public Act 132, which preempts the right of Michigan citizens to regulate seeds within their communities:

Animal Factory Polluter Bills (House Bills 5711-5716) will transfer authority over certain environmental laws concerning the agricultural industry from DEQ to MDA, making factory farms much more difficult to regulate.  For more information and to take action, go to:

Bicyclists Rights: A couple of introduced bills that would improve the rights of bicyclists in Michigan need broad support.

"Buy Fresh, Buy Local- Select Michigan Day" Please help us get the word out to bring producers and consumers together and support local food! September 14, 2006 has been named the 2nd annual "Buy Fresh, Buy Local- Select Michigan Day" to encourage consumers to choose local food in their communities. Michigan Food & Farming Systems (MIFFS) and the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) are sponsors for the day.

EAT IN, ACT OUT week, July 31-Aug 6 - BLAST (Builing Local Agricultural
Systems Today
), the youth initiative of The Food Project in Boston, is
organizing and promoting Eat In, Act Out Week. It is an annual event to
encourage communities to eat locally and think critically about their food
choices. "Eat In" refers to using local food, cooking food yourself instead
of eating fast food or take out, and "Act Out" means speaking up and taking
action to change our food system and promote local food. There are lots of
great ideas for events on their website-- BLAST. Get the youth in your community to
help spread the good word about local food.

      • For more information about the event: BLAST
